In the Night

In the Night

He was probably searching for food

Finding what he could to keep alive

Lurking late into the night

He probably thought no one would see him

Scouring for warmth and companionship

But then my headlights revealed him

An opossum, a bizarre fellow indeed

In that moment

He probably thought he was doomed

A predator has come to take him away

But all I did was stare back

I stared back into his scared tiny eyes

For that second, we were the same

Both alone and looking for answers

Both frightened, but hopeful in what we would find

Both unsure what tomorrow will bring

And then away he scurried

Into the night to face whatever he may
